Following the recent trial where two sign Language interpreters based in Derbyshire, were found guilty of defrauding the Department of Work and Pensions through their Access to Work scheme, the Steering Committee of Visual Language Professionals wish to state that we deplore the actions of any “interpreters” or people working in the guise of being an interpreter, who commits such crimes. Although they were not members of Visual Language Professionals their actions may leave people questioning the integrity of our profession.

At this particularly difficult time for all Sign Language Interpreters, Visual Language Professionals would point to the fact that the vast majority of interpreters are highly qualified professionals who provide a high standard of work on a daily basis in a wide variety of settings.
